She reports the loss of six of the crew who, when the vessel sprang, a leak, volunteered to entor the poisonous gas generated in the hold to rescue a comrade and were overcome while working there. The first mate, Elliot entered the bow hold seeking the leak, and was overcome. Four Englishmen and one Finn followed, trying to rescue Elliot. All j died, and were buried in the sand dunes near Tuxpau, Mexico, in the neighborhood of which the accident occurred
