Sydney, June 16.
. Discussing the defects in the equipment and organisation of the Cockatoo Dock, Mr. Cook said: "Whatever is required ivill be provided. It would have been far better to have allowed the building of the. fleet unit to have been completed in England, whilst the dock could have been overhauled and made ready to build the subsidiary vessels which are quite due now. We should have had a fleet in being complete and £IOO,OOO good money saved, which would have purchased another cruiser."
NAVY WILL VISIT NEW ZEALAND.
Sydney, June 10. The major portion of the Australian fleet will visit- New Zealand at the end of the year. The -date has not been arranged. Senator Millen states that the submarines will not accompany the fleet. It is also questionable whether the torpedo boats will go.
Regarding the suggested training of detachments of New Zealand naval cadets at the Commonwealth College, Senator Millen says the question needs careful consideration. Possibly the authorities will he unable to take any this year, hut will be in a position to take a limited number in the subsequent period if so desired. Australia would help New Zealand as much as possible in this respect, hut under existing arrangements what one.wishes might prove too great a tax upon the institution. The college authorities arc enquiring into details and will probably furnish a report as to its practicability.
