jMr J. E. Armstrong, district manager of railways, \\*, 0 has ibeen on a visit to New Plymouth, returns to Wanganui this morning. Mr Geo. Kiddie, a very odd and respected resident of Oartorton, died on Saturday afternoon. He had been airing for some time.
Mr H. A. Dando, elefctrieal engineer to the Auckland Tramways Company, was in New Plymouth! yesterday, and, in company with Mr Black, in charge of the New Plymouth electrical department, inspected the local works. He leaves !>v train this reoraing.
A Gisborne telegram reports the death of Captain Tbbmas Fernandez, a well-known coastal pilot, who came to New Zealand sixty years ago. He was trading on tflio coast, and subsequently, during the Maori war, commanded the gunship Pioneer. •,
Mr J. MeeJi&n, who left Feilding in April last on a trip to Irela.no., died at DuiDlin on 'Tuesday tost. Mr Meehan, who was 60 years 01 age arrived in Hawke's Bay as a young man in 1876. He was for 22 years a member of the Police Force, being stationed at Wellington, Wanganui, Bulls, Marton, and Fcflding.
The death occurred in Wellington on Saturday night of Mrs Alice Hedley, of Masterton, aged 79 years. Deceased lived in Masterton for 20 years, and was on a visit to Iher daughter, Mrs It, G. Knight. Miss Gross, science mistress at the Girls' High 'School, has been granted twelve montias' leave of absence, in order to take advantage of an offer of one of the two free first-class return passages to England offered by the Orient, Union, and H'uddart-Paxker Steamship Companies to New Zealand university graduates who dea/ire to study in Elirope. The passage was offered to ner on the recommendation of the New Zealand University Senate. The funeral of the late Mr Walter Perry took place at Masterton on Sunday, and was one of tlhe largest in the 'history of the district. As deceased was formerty captain of the Rafte Volunteers, lie was accorded a military funeral. The ihearse was preceded bv the Territorial battalion band, pipe band, cadets, and veterans. Fully three, thousand persons were at the graveside, where an impressive ceremony was performed by t'he Rev. D. J. Murray. The rt-itb. occurred yesterday morning of Gi-ryj Henry Davies, of Kaireri, aged 70. lie was a «>n of Dr. Davies, who v.-ha associated with the early missionaries at the Bay of Islands and Opotiki. He was born at t'he Bay of Islands, and was educated there and at the Church of England Grammar School, Auwdand From 1872 to 19011 he was in the Government Service as , interpreter and translator in the Native Department. He was a member of the Polynesian Society, and for many year* a leading chess player, besides borne a keen 'horticulturist.— Wellington telegram.
