TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.

SPECITAL MEETING-.

At a soecial meeting of the Tarnmki branch of the Taranaki Teachers' Institute on Friday evening. Mr R, C. Templcr, in tlie absence of .lihl? president (Mr H. Stratford) presided over an attendance of about thirty teachers. The chairman, in a few preliminary remarks, referred to the value of the Institute in binding the teachers together to further their own interests. He pointed out that they had now a court of appeal, a supcrunmuition scheme, and a -epc-r devoted to tßic interests of the profession. This, although not duo wMly to the Institute, iliad been brought about by its work. He made an appeal to teachers to join the Institute, and help on the efforts towards a Dominion ipromotion scheme and other advantages to the profession. Mr 'Mcllroy also made an instructive address on the subject of promotion schemes. It was decided to hold a meeting in May. New members were elected, bringing the total ud to 162 active and four honorary 'members, the highest it has ever been. A motion was carried with the object of bettering the conditions under which some of the teachers put in their 80 hours' practical work in gaining the C certificate. The resolution of tihe School Committees' Conference, as to Standard VI. examinations, was endorsed.
