PROVIDENTIAL ESCAPE.
MOTORISTS NARROWLY ESCAPE DROWNING. UNDER OVERTURNED OAR.
Wellington, Last Night.
One of the most providential escapes from death that could he imagined occurred this evening in a lonely part of Evans Bay. A motor-car turned bottom uppermost in the water, a little way past the Patent Slip, was the alarming sight that met the gaze of a passer-by, who had heard a preliminary crash about six o'clock. The man, whose name was not ascertainable to-night, waded in, and discovered a man and Woman in the water under the overturned car. He rescued the couple, who proved to be a Maori and bis wife, Mr. and Mrs. Ngatuere, who reside at Coutts' Station, Kilbirnie, whither they were proceeding when the mishap occurred. The woman was in semi-un-conscious condition. Dr. Elliott was summoned, and he found that both were suffering from shock and from their immersion in the water. They were given first aid, and were subsequently conveyed in the ambulance to their home. Had it not been for the fact that a man happened to be passing along the road, the Maoris would most certainly have been drowned. There is only one house in the immediate vicinity, and the accident would probably have been unnoticed until it was too late to save the natives' lives.
