PERSONAL.
Mr Walter Perry, one of the pioneer settlors of the Masterton district, who arrived at New Plymouth with his parents in 1841, died last evening at the age of 75 years. He served in the Maori war in Turanaki, and was one of the ..rat members of the Masterton Borough Council Aa>ociation. The death occurred shortly after midnight of Mr Clement W. Govett, who has been seriously ill for several days. A sudden change occurred in his 1 condition during the evening, and Ihe gradually sank. The late Mr Govett was a son of Archdeacon Govett, and was born in 2\ew Plymouth. He received bis early education in Auckland, and then went to England, where he entered the Middle Temple, and was called to *he bar in 1874. Upon his return to New Zealand ho was appointed assistantsolicitor to the Crown, a position which he resigned in order to follow the practice of his profession in New Plymouth, where he has practised with' great success since the beginning of 1877. In 1901 he admitted Mr J. 11. Quilliam to partnership. Outside his profession, Mr Govett has been known principally for his wliole-iearted interest in scenery preservation and the conservation of lihe native bush. He- rendered: yeoman service as a member of the New Plymouth Recreation Grounds Board, and has for many years been a prominent member of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce. He was one of the orincipol workers in the promotion of the Taranaki Scenery Preservation Society, the premier amciety of its kind in New Zealand. Mr Govctt's niche in the citric life of Mew Plymouth will be hard to fill.
