THE'ACCUSED AN IMBECILE. SENTENCED TO HARD IABOR FOR Ui)E .
By Telegraph—Preaa Association. Timaru, Last Night. The (Jeraldinc murder case occupied the Court all day. The jury, after 2% hours retirement, at ten pm returned a verdict of manslaughter. The evidence for the prosecution was the same as at the inquest. The defence offered as defences: Selfdefence, Wows under provomtioji;. and the imbecility of the accused. Cripps swore that Stevenson struck' him flrfjt. Four doctors were called. Two of them considered Oripps' an imbecile, and two descrioed him as a degenerate, but with a knowledge of right and wrong. Other witnesses stated that Cripps was stupid as a boy and youth, and that otevenson was cantankerous and difficult to git on with. The Judge, saying he ought not to be at large again, sentenced Oripps tj hard labor for life.
