BOKO UGH COUNCIL. The ordinary mont'iily meeting of the council was held On Monday evening:. Present: Mis Worship the Mayor, Crs. lung, Musters, Mcrison, Richards and Boon. Cr. Reader having made his declaration, was heartily welcomed by the mayor, Who expressed the opinion that the new councillor would, soon take an interest in the work and be of service in the administration of 'borough affairs. The present council chamber was very plain, and its equipment very simple, but in the future councillors might be provided with cushioned seats ami (he •mayor installed in an elaborate chair, but until then they would have to bo content with things as- they were. Reader ■briefly replied, thanking ■th-e mayor lor his words of welcome, and stating mat although new to work on the council he was an old resident of the town, and would do his best to promote its %>st interests. Cr. Arden was granted three months' leave of absence owing to ill-health. Mr. Copcstake, slaughterman at the.' a'battcirs, waited oil the -council, asking i for an addition ot os per week to his wages.—The matter was referred to the abattoir committee. .Mr. X. J. King, the town clerk statedl that the pre-ent -system only protected consumers fnni being supplied with diseased meat, whereas it was suggested that, the meat should be graded Ist, 2nd or 3rd grade, and so stamped. _ The' Mayor expressed himself strongly "m favor of the remit. Accounts amfl'iinting to £432 4s fid were passeu for payment. HOSPITAL BOABD. The ordinary meeting of the Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs ,1. McAllister (chairman), C. D. Sole, Jas. Smith, E. Walter, W. Rogers, E. Hine, A. Meredith and J. ChristoiTel. PROPOSED RADIUM INSTITUTE. The Palmerston Board wrote asking for co-operation in the appeal for funds to establish a radium institute in the North Island, to which £2OOO had already been subscribed. Mr. Sole moved that the matter be left to the chairman and .secretary, to report upon. The chairman considered that the matter was one for the Government to take up, and he moved —"That this Hoard is of opinion that the matter of providing a radium institute is for the. State to deal with. Mr. Sole withdrew his proposal, and the chairman's motion was carried. FRIENDLY vSOCIETfES. Mr. Sole pointed out the good work the Friendly Societies' Association was doing in connection With the payment I of hospital charges, stating that last '■ year £ 1100 had been paid out in respect , of charges layaMc by members. He I also stated that applications for membership had come from as far as Masterton. I On the -nlotiOiiof Mr. Smith,.a vote of ] thanks Was accorded to the Association and medical societies. REPORTS. The medical superintendent (Dr. Steven) reported that during May 13 patients 'were admitted, 19 discharged tlnd one died, nine remaining. Four 'Operations were performed. There were no eases in the isolation ward. The matron wrote asking that some'thing be done to the grounds round the isolatien building.—On the motion of Mr. Walter, the matter was le'ft in the hands of the visiting committee, with power to act. The sanitary inspector (Mr.'A, Gray) reported two cases of infantile paralysis, one in the town and the other in the country. He stated very fully the facts relating to the former case, and the steps taken with regard to isolation and disinfection, but in the former case, which occurred some mouths back, thcTe had been difficulties in tracing the facts. The chairman stated that in connection with the town ease there hail .been insinuations 'hat action with regard to isolation, etc.. had not been sufficiently prompt, but he was convinced there, was no foundation for such a rumor. The Board had every confidence in its ollicer. who was very prompt, tactful and thorough. On the motion of Mr. Sole, seconded by Mr. Smith, the report was received, and an expression of confidence in the inspector recorded. ■Mr. Sole, on behalf of the visiting committee, reported that satisfactory progress was being made with the enlargement of the nurses' quarters, and that the interior and exterior of the hospital were fn excellent order and condition. The chairman stated that the interior ! of the hospital was looking better than it had done for some years. —The report was adopted. KEEPING ACCOUNTS. The secretary of the Taranaki Hospital Hoard, wrote forwarding a copy of | a. resolution adverse to the system of 1 keeping accounts proposed by the Department.—On the motion of Mr. Smtih. ! it was resolved, to endorse the action of the Taranaki Boaial. FINANCE. 'The treasurer reported receipts as .€52,1 ()s lis. hospital expenses ,C3!)fi Ms Sd, and charitable aid expenses £BO j 13s. The amount in hand was CTTti lis, j and subsidy due £'.)s 7s Bd. I GENERAL PARAGRAPHS I The Electrical Supply Company has j defrayed the cost of the burial of Mr. j Webberiey's son, who was .killed through contact with an electric wire. During the month the borough mI spector impounded 75 head of cattle. At tlte -ocal abattoirs last month there were slaughtered 77 cows. 21) heifers, 2 oxen, '2 calves, 278 sheep, 37 lambs, and S3 pigs. There were'prepared ol i tripes and four cowheels.
