TJJK .JS-EW STIOA'MER SERVICE, A BlCi THING FOR Tlili DOMINION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington. Last, Night. Tlve announcement made n low days ago that <i new regular direct line of German steamers to New Zealand w.is about to ibe inaugurated < overs one of tiie ino.it interesting moves in the, shipping world, as far ns the Dominion is eoncerneu 1 . At tile same time, according to -enquiries matte by a Timrs reporter, tine fact tliat Ocnnany is seeking trade in these waters is going to mean, a bigger thing fo,- New Zealand than many people imagine, tierman steamers of 10,000, 12,000, and probably 14,000 fens calling regularly at tlie four principal centres will iucmu increased port dues ior harbor 'boards aiul a probable opening of trad® with a country that is now competing for the mastery of the world's commerce. Very little detail has been received bv the Wellington agents of the NDL Line (Messrs Oastendyk and Fockej regarding -tfle new service from the Continent, t'o New Zealand ports. The first vessel is announced to tawe the Continent towards the middle of next month. Die outward route of the steamers will be via Capetown and IRnbart, thence to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedm, and, in BOme cases', Bluff The 'homeward route is not yet announced, but it is anticipated tlhat the vessels wi'l go via South America, allowin" space to pick up frozen meat from Ai" gentino. The service is to be maintained! by the steamer,* iof tlie German-Aus-tralian and N.D.L. lines monthly, so ! 'there will ibe two stwiniors", one loading l and one discharging; j n Ncav Zealand waters during each month: Thie class 'oi cargo which is to be brought from the Continent is as yet a matter of conjecture, .but in shipping and commercial circles it is anticipated that this new move, backed! up by the German trade combine, means, that the German manufacturers'intend to .piMi new trade -in tlie Dominion. Homeward, tlie cargo will be principally .of frozen flneat, mutton predominating. Getnnany now does an extensive trade with the Argentine in frozen beef, so that exportation of this product to . the Continent will not be as extensive ns tllatrof frozen mutton and lamb. Tlie German-. kistralian steamer 'Linden is already on her way t'o New Zealand from Ilamourg, withi a cargo of manures, ibounil for the Blu.i, Port Chalmers and Lyittelton. It was thought that this vessel wa's the first of the new line, but Mr Focke stated to-day that she tes nothing to do with it. A cargo of phosphates happened to bo offering, and tihere was nothing to show that this was the beginning "of the new service. In any oase the new line would not bs stfcU'ted from the Continent until July.
