ASIATIC EXPANSION.
A CONTROVERSY ON CITIZENSHIP. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 4, 9.5 p.m. London, June 4. The Times says it is difficult to believe that the wisest Indian leaders' approve of shipping Hindus to Canada. The controversy based on the assertion of British citizenship involves the.right of unrestricted entry into any part of the British dominions, but free peoples have the right to say whom they will admit, and any attempt to force the phrase beyona its legitimate meaning will only prejudice the position of the Indians themselves. That the shadow of Asiatic expansion has already fallen on Australia and New Zealand is seen in the reluctance of Australia to use Asiatic labor for the development of the Northern Territory, though urgent need exists for such development. A PETITION TO THE KING. Received 4, 9.50 p.m. Vancouver, June 4. The Hindus are appealing to the King and the Duke of Connaught, stating that they were refused food find water . by the immigration officials. The Department declares that it would allow the Hindus ashore to fetch food ' and water, but they would starve until admitted, or until the charter expired.
