A notice lias been posted in the pits that unless the men worked in' the afternoon shift to-dny the mines would be closed down. The men at the Greta pit did not work in this afternoon's shift, and those- in the other collieries appear equally determined. It is almost certain that these pits will be closed to-morrow, thus rendering idle nearly 4000 men. The executive of the Miners' Federation are not advising the men in the matter, leaving tliem to fight their own battle, but an attempt will be made to confine tlie trouble to the Maitland field. WESTRALTAN BUILDERS. Perth, June 1. Three thousand are rendered idle in connection with the building trade trouble. THE WAIHI DISMISSALS. MINING COMPANIES' REPLY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Waihi, Last Night. As the outcome of the special meeting last week, the Miners' Union executive waited on the superintendents of the Waihi and Grand Junction gold mining companies to-day in respect to the recent dismissals. The companies have replied: "We reserve to ourselves the right to engage or discharge any employees we choose."
