Mr William MteKeown, recently manager of the Te Roti factory of the 151-tl'-am Dairy Company, bos been appointed manager of tho Feathers ton Dairy Company's factory. Captain Atitwood, formerly of the Elingamitc, who has for several yean occupied the position of shore Miperin tendent at Wellington for the Westport Goal Company, intends (to go into business on his own account as a surveyor of Ships at Wellington.
The position of officer conunuding • the Wellington military district, has, it is understood, been offered .to Major Johnson,, son of the Hon. 0. J. Johnston, M.LJO, of Wellington. Major Johnston is an officer of the Imperial Army, and is at present in India. IBs acceptance of the post remains subjectto ithc approval of the War Office. Another gap in tho rapidly-thinning line of pffoneer settlers has been made by the death of Mr John Sinclair, of Kaukapakapa, at the age of 79 ,wars. After various adventures on thtjSndfipjds of Qtago and Woatk.nd,'of3pßed settled in the Kaukapakapo, district nearly fifty yews ago, and Sunnygide, his homestead, was looked upon as a model holding. Until recently tbe enjoyed good health. Mr 'Sinclair was esteemed lor his uprightness of character, and for his personal integrity., He left a widow and a grown-up family of two.
At yesterday's jweeiting of the Ta-ra-naki County Council, Cr. Hopaon, as the oldest member of the Council, presented the Chairman (Mr. J. Brown), on behalf of the Council and staff, with a handsome silver teapot, suitably inscribed, in commemoration of his silver wedding, - which he celebrated recently. Cr. Hopson referred to the kindly relations which had always existed between Winself and Mr. Brown during their 21 years of work together on the Council ami on the Moa Road Board.. He paid ft tribute to the manner in which Mr. Brown lind administered the affairs of the county, and expressed the best j wishes of the Council for future health ami prosperity. Mr. Brown suitably responded.
Another Taranaki veteran has pawed away in ithc person of Mr Matthfew Jones, who lived .in Waitftra for many years, says tllio Mail. The lato Mr Jones was a. native of Staffordshire, England, and ho came out to New Zealand with his uncle, Lieut. Jones, in tho ship True Briton, landing at Wellington a.t the age of twelve years. By tho time ho had reached an age when tho responsibilities of life had to be faced, the -Maori war was gripping the country, and Mr Jones enteral t3m ranks of fighters to protcot his adopted land. -He rose to the mnk of 1 captain, and wai fjpoken of ac a man prepared for any emergency. W'hen peace was restored Mr Jones entered in the employment of ; .the late" Mr SkuMlewortli, and for the last twenty ymrs owned a timber yard in Waitara.
