CELEBRATIONS IN AUSTRALIA. SOME NOTABLE SPEECHES. By Cable—l'; Association—Copyright Sydney, May 26. Speeches were delivered at the meeting of the Empire League, the newlyformed branch of the Colonial Institute, at dinners and other Empire Day functions by the Governor-General, the Governors, Mr. Cook, the Admiral, and other leaders. The speakers appreciated the growth of the Imperial anil Australian national sentiments, and referred to the importance of the local navy and cadet system. Sir R. C. Muni'o-Ferguscn, GovernorGeneral, declared that life was all too short for the Empire service. Australia was the Empire's one child of peace, yet she had grasped thoroughly tlie sure way to preserve that blessing. None faced up more readily to the burden which fell upon her in the post of honor as Queen of the Pacific. The Admiral Baid whatever happened the fact remained that Australia now had an efficient fleet, quite small, but efficient. Australians should be proud of possessing u fleet materially and usefully defending the great Empire.
