THE DEVON WRECK.
AS AN ARTILLERY TARGET. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Sight. A start was made this morning with the operations which are designed to result in the totai destruction of the remains of the steamer Devon nt Pcncarrow Heads. A squad of fifty members of the R.N.Z.A., under Lieut. Thring, went out to Fort Do.v.<et, and fired 7 rounds from the (Jin mark Vlf. guns, with armor-piercing and lyddite shells. The operations were witnessed by Colonel Johnston, Director of Ordnance, and Major Hume, from the .Janio Seddon. It is reported that the armorpiercing shells proved much move effective, the bridge and funnel Mill'ering considerably. The range was something over 4000 yards.
