THE BAND CARNIVAL.
COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL. Tlie fina ; l act in connection with the recent successful Band Carnival eventuated last night, wlien the Citizens' Committee entertained at a complimentary social in the Good Templar Hall those who had assisted or contributed to its success. There was a. good attendance, and one and all enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Dancing, interspersed with singing, helped to pass a very pleasant evening, non-dkneors being provided with cards on the stage. Mr. H. Brooks, as M.C4 kept the ball moving merrily to the strains of delightful music provided by Mrs. George's orchestra. Prior to the supper adjournment, Mr. G. W. Browne, president of the Citizens' Committee, in a few happy remarks, referred to the remarkable success that liad attended the carnival. A* a result, they now had a, sum of money invested sufficient to produce £1 per week to provide music, etc., and otherwise, help the Band. He referred at length to the work done by the candidates for the "Carnival Queen" and tfhoir committees, and said that tl«j Cirtduena' Committee had decided to present the "Queen" with some insignia of office that would be a. lasting taemory of the pleasant time spent aa "Queen." He then called on "Sir" James Hill ft) pnvest ."Queen" Hilda, who wag present on the stage with her maids of honor, with a, beautiful wristlet watch, suitably inscribed. This the popular country knight did, amidst great applause. Mr. Hill returned thanks on Misb Bishop's behalf, hoping that the town would hear a good deal of its band now that the finances were on n good footing, for a band wag a very necessary adjunct to a progressive town.
Mr. Browne then paid e tribute to the work of the secretary, Mr. R. 0. Ellis, who liad been in charge of the committee's affairs since its inception over eighteen months ago. It was his wonderful organisation and zeal] that had caused the carnival to be such a success. His methods were so complete that every copper could be traced. As a further tribute, he stated that the secretarial expenses JSad been 50 per cent, less than those of other carnivals. He then presented Mr. Ellis, on behalf of the committee, with a handsome gold watch and chain, insoribed: "Presented to K. 0. Evlis by the New Plymouth Citizens' Band Committee, "for services rendered," and to Mrs. Ellis a silver toast rack and egg stand. Mr. Ellis, in returning' thanks, said he had worked with the best of intentions, of promoting music in the town. The money raised had exceeded his expectations. The president had, ho thought, been too generous in his remarks concerning him. There were many oth»r willing helpers, ami he instanced the stall holders, whom ho enumerated, whose takings amounted to £97 16s, paying a special meed of praiso to Mrs. (1. W. Browne (organiser of the Ladies' Committee), to the Arcadian Revels, niul to the Carnival Queen candidates and their committers. They could tell how much these latter had contributed to the success of the carnival wnen he mentioned that without them the profit would have been only £2OO. (Applause). A recherche supper was then handed round by the ladies' «ominittce, and after fui'l justice had been done, dancin.g, r was Ti-.umed and kept up vigorously for two or three hours. During the evening songs were ghv.n by Misses Blair and McGuiro, the accompaniments being played by Miss Harrison. Extras we.jje played By Kits Bennett and Mrs, George.
