When standing on the deek of the steamer, he entered into conversation with a. , stranger. Montietli pulled out a gold ; watch to see the time. The stranger ] remarked on its excellent design, and asked its value. 'Montietli replied that lie did not know, as the watch was a , present from his mother. The stranger suggested that it should be valued, and induced Montietli to go to a well-known jewellar's in George street. The stranger entered with the watch. Montietli waited outside for half an hour, and then found that the stranger had dipped out by another door.
