BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY.

A RE-ASSURIXfe! REPORT. BY THE DOMIXIOX ANALYST. The borough engineer (Mr. C. fckitrop) haa received from the Dominion Analyst a report on specimens of the borough water supply from the Mangamahoß and Waiwakaiko rivers, which, m the light of recent criticisms, make reassuring reading. The report says that tha hoe water, on standing, gave a very small deposit of organic debris,-with considerable number of diatoms (a form of crystals). The Waiwakaiho water also gave a very small deposit, consisting mainly of organic matter, with a f'.'vv siliceous particles, but no diatoms. The waters, according to the reports, are both of good quality for household use. The Mangamahoe is very soft, the Waiwakaiho being somewhat harder, showing a small proportion of carbanate of lime 011 boiling for some time. Tie Waiwakaiho is slightly the better »f the two as regards freedom from organic impurity, and is more palatable owing to the presence of a larger proportion of carbonate of lime on boiling.

"As there is not much difference in the quality of the waters," (fie Analyst concludes, "the choice of one of them for a town supply must be determined largely by distance of supplier and possibility of contamination."
