Mayoral Elections

TOE NEW PLYMOUTH CONTEST. ' WIN l'Oll MR. WILSON. BY MAJORITY OF 91 VOTES. At the election of Mayor of New Plymouth yesterday, Mr. J, E. Wilson was elected by a majority of 91 votes over those polled by the other candidate, Mr. G. W, Browne, the sitting Mayor. Only 1800 votes were polled out of a roll number of 4600 electors. Nine informal votes were recorded. The election, as may lie judged from tile smallness of the poll, did not excite very widespread interest, although tho feeling was keen among those who did vote. The work done on 'behalf of the successful candidate was unostentatious, and the figures proved that motor-cars are not an indispensable aid to organisation. The returning officer, Mr. F. T. Bellringer, and his staff of assistants worked hard, and the results were announced to a gathering of electors outside the Town Hall less than an hour after the 'closing of the poll. Mr. Jas. Clarke briefly returned thanks on behalf of Mr. Wilson, who, owing vo illness, was unable to be present, and in doing so mentioned that there would now bo a vacancy on the Council, to which they would be pleased to welcome Mr. Browne if he saw fit to conteßt the scat. v Mr. G. W. Browne, the retiring Mayor, thanked all those Who had worked on behalf of his candidature. He assured them that lie harbored no bad feeling as to the result of the poll, and said good-bye to the people after his years of service, with the best of good feeling. DETAILED POLLING.
