The Suffragettes
CIRCUMVENTING THE POLICE. BY SWIMMING IN THE SERPENTINE. Times and Sydney Sun Services. Received 28, 5.35 p.m. London, April 27. Thousands were amused at Hyde Park on Sunday afternoon. Tie suffragettes had proposed to hold a meeting in boats " on the Serpentine, but the authorities would not permit it, and moored the [' boats in the middle of tlie Serpentine. ' Two suffragettes threw off their clothing and entered the water in bathing costumes. They were cheered as they swam to the boats and cut them adrift. A third suffragette arrived by motorcar in her bathing dress, and she also dived in. All were arrested by tfce ' boatmen, and escorted through an im- * mense jeering crowd in Hyde Park to the police station, where they were eharged and subsequently released.
