WAITARA HARBOR.

(To the Editor.) Sir.—At the banquet tendered to tin; Lion.'the. .Minister o£ Public Works at Urenui, the matter of the proposed improvements to the Waitara harbor was spoken of by Mr. J. I line, jnnr., who, during the course of his speech, said: ■•ln 1908 the Waitara Harbour BoarJ, and especially Messrs. Stubbs and Ogle, had had them relieved of the liability of the New Plymouth Harbor District." Now, .sir, without wishing in any way to detract from the able efforts so successfully put forth by the gentlemen mentioned, might I say that at least one other should have had the credit due to him for the great work done which accomplished what was required. I refer to Mr W. T. Jennings, to whom personally the district has more than they know of to think for the success of the Bill that relieved the district, but I suppose it would be too much to ask such pillars of "Reform" to acknowledge in public the work done by Mr. Jennings. This petty action in regard to the passing of a vote of thanks for his services to the Board is quite sufficient to show what is in their minds and how personally bitter they can be against one who holds different views to themselves. The public of the district at the time, or soon after the passing of the Bill, clearly gave evidence of whom they thought was worthy of ti.jir appreciation by presenting Mr. Jennings with a suitably engraved gold watch and chain, and amongst the speakers at the dinner tendered to Mr. Jennings were -Messrs. Stubbs, Ogle and I-line, junr., each one lauding their guest on the work he had performed. At that time the two former gentlemen supported Mr. Jennings, whilst the latter on the occasion of the dinner said that although he was not a supporter of Mr. Jennings, he must admit that he was the best Member they had had, and now this same gentleman is so bitter in his hostility that he cannot even mention Mr. Jennings' name when it certainly should have been at the Urenui banquet when laudations were being poured on others. Mr. Hine must not forget also that many others gave valued atssissance in placing the Bill before the House, and I say right here that Mr. Jas. Hine, junr., was not one of them.—l am, etc., r "SQUARE DEAL."
