CORRESPONDENCE.
THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.
(To the Editors
Sir, —Visiting the Public Library last Thursday evening with a friend, a stranger to the town, with the object of acquiring information of mutual interest from a volume in the Reference Library, I found on arrival that the department was closed. Descending the stairs, the Librarian, addressing nie, asked did I not know that the Library was closed on Thursdays. Replying in the negative, the Librarian sarcastically remarked that "I had been long enough in the town to know." Being quite uncalled for, I naturally resented this, and politely pointed out to him that tht period of my residence in the town was not his concern, and civility cost nothing. The objection, however, only elicited further sarcasm. The incident will not enhance the reputation which the public officials of the town as a body have earned. Thanking you for space granted me for ventilation of this incident, —I am, etc., B. GORDON.
