SYNDICALIST TACTICS

The anarchical methods of the unemployed under the direction of the syndicalist organisation known as the Industrial Workers of the World, have been causing serious concern in New York. An army of unemployed raided churches, theatres, and lecture-halls, and, encouraged by past excesses, idle men 4aily became more demonstrative, also unreasonable. Bather than cause a disturbance, the pastors of many churches allowed the invaders to sleep in the basements, and the parishioners in several cases provided the homeless with food and drink. The industrial leaders, however, had a programme to carry out, and while submission on the part of some churches was arrogantly accepted, they declared that their object was to arouse 100,000 men to unite and demand thai the community should provide them with good, Bteady, remunerative positions. It was pointed out that no anan need be idle in New York, as the city required all the available men to shovel snow, but the industrial workers retorted that the men had been instructed to refuse such employment because, when the snow was removed, they would again be without work. The invaders of the churches and theatres were careful to commit no act which would put them in the power of the poli«e, and in most cases when police aid was asked the inen dispersed quietly. Since the programme commenced, hundreds of the worst class of unemployed —those men who Will not work —have been attracted from neighbouring cities, so that the unions' claim of 350,000 idle men in New York State comes nearer being correct than ever before. Officials of the Industrial YV orkers declared that they will continue to agitate and incite until their object of placing the masses in contrel of the industries is accomplished. "If we do not get jobs," they said, "we will compel the rich to support unemployed people and to support them property.
