NOXIOUS WEEDS.
ENFORCEMENT OF ACT WANTED,
Tlie Eltliam branch forwarded a remit for the Executive of the Taramiki Fanners' Union which met last Thursday, asking that the Noxious Weeds' Act should be more vigorously enforced than it had been in the past. Mr. Swindlehurst said that complaints had come from the back-blocks, forty miles from iiltham, that the noxious weeds were not being kept down, .Mr. Davidson remarked that there were similar complaints only three milus from llawera,
'Mr. Washer said the question of dealing with noxious weeds was a big one. especially in the back country. The President jocularly' remarked that this was an ''evergreen remit." He had seen in Southland that some pest had been attacking Californian thistle. The executive might move a vote of condolence with the Southland executive ill having their best feed destroyed. Mr. Wills pointed out thai along the railway line, between llawera and t'almerston North, there was enough noxious weeds, particularly Californian thistle, to stock tilie whole of New Zealand. It was a case of "physician cure thyself." Air. Washer said that some time ago the complaint referred to by Mr. Wills was brought under the notice of the Prime Minister, or the Minister for Agriculture. who replied in effect that there were certain men told off to keep noxious weeds in check. Tf the executive informed the authorities where the weeds were growing, steps would be taken to have them destroyed. The remit was agreed to.
