UPPER HUTT EXPLOSION.
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. 1-ne Hutt nr« inquiry was continued to-day before Mr. W. G. Riddel), S.M. Herbert Victor Ben&e, senior partner m the firm of Benge and Pratt, storekeepers, whose premises were burned, was m the witness Vox nearly all day. He said lie had no knowledge as to the quantify of 'gelignite in stock at the time of the firv. He believed there was *one then, but there were some sporting cartridges. Mr. Morrison, counsel for Benge and Pratt, asked Chief Detective Broberg what steps the Oi'own was taking regarding certain white spots found afterwards on the clothing of a man who was in the wrecked building when the explosion occurred. The Chief Detective replied that the spots had been analysed and were found not to 'be caused by carbid*. Tho inquiry was adjourned till tomorrow.
