At the teachers' conference, Miss , Croxon moved for equal pay for men and women, asserting that girls, as future mothers of the race, are every whit as important as t'he coming fathers. . A man interjected: "Drop this silly psychological drivel." Another remarked: "Teaching is rapidly becoming a woman's profession. The male teacher will soon be as extinct as the dodo." The proposal was defeated by an overwhelming majority. TEACHERS' WORLD-WIDE GRIEVANCE. London, April 14. At the Teachers' Conference, the President, Mr. Steer, stated that the dearth of teachers was due to the unattractiveness of tihe profession which was chiefly due to the poor pay. The average salary of certificated headmasters was £146 and of mistresses £lOl. There were fourteen thousand fully-qualified teachers not earning a living wage.
