Corpse "Welcomed"
QUEER JAPANESE CUSTOMS. DEATH OF THE EMPRESSDOWAGER. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 14, 5.15 p.m. / Tokio, April 14.
The people were kept in ignorance of the deatli of the Dowager-Empress until the corpse crossed the threshold of the palace, because a death in the Imperial family is only admitted within the capital.
The corpse was returned with the same state as the Dowager left the j city in January. It was received at the station by Princes and Ministers, and granted a farewell audience. The corpse was driven at a trot to the palace in the state coach, with drawn blinds, under an escort of Lancers, between lines of troops. The streets contained the masses of the people, but not until the corpse had been welcomed at the palace by the Empress, and escorted to apartments, was the truth officially unveiled to the world.
