A CIiEAT SUCCESS. SATURDAY'S PLAY. The Xew Plymouth Golf Club's ninth annual tournament opened on Saturday. Entries, wliile not quite as good as last year's, which were a record, were numerous, and included players from all ovev the province and from as far south as Wellington. Considering that this year Auckland is also holding a tournament, the entries must be considered satisfactory. Since Last year considerable improvements have been made to the links, the fairway having been cleared and the putting greens improved. Competitors are unanimous in their praise not only of the links and their appointments, but also of the general arrangements for the tournament, which are capably supervised by the lion, secretary, .Mr. J. Paton.

The weather on Saturday was not ideal, a drizzling rain at times making matters unpleasant, but not being sufli-. cient to interfere with play. The quality of the play was not such as might have been expected for the standard of some of the players engaged, but it is, of course, early in the season. The best rounds were put up by L. Seifert (82), G. R. Wright (88) and A* Seifert (two 89's). Last year 210 qualified for the championship, but this year 200 was cut out. The best gross score for the thirty-six holes was 174, as against 180 last year. The handicap was annexed by G. E. Wright, with a net score of 159. Eight teams entered for the Teams Match, and four completed the course, Palmerston North winning comfortably. In the championship qualifying round, seven of those who qualified last year again made good, including the runner, up of last year (D. l'ryde, ®f FeiMing). i Saturday's results: —■
