OUR MOST PROGRESSIVE Dlil' UiTMSN7\ liy Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Postmaster-General (the Hon. R. Ileaton Rhodes) laid the ioundationBtone of the new post office at Akaroa, in the presence of a large gathering. In the course of his speech, he said that the Ward Government had put « vote on the Estimates for the buildiiui. but the matter got no further till the present Government took office, although the necessity for a new building was very pressing. Referring to the Post and Telegraph Department, the Minister slid it was one of tliei most, if not the j most progressive Department in the DoI miuion, and under tile present Government it was continuing its career of progress. He instanced the extension cf the telephone system, reduction in pareel rates, in wireless and cable rates, and the increase in the rate of interest on Post Office Savings Bank deposits, as an evidence of the progress of the Department under the present Government. Afterwards, the Minister onened Daly's Wharf, which had reently been rebuilt at a cost of £BOO, and- which will be of value from a tourist and mail point of view. The Hon. Mr Rhodes left for Wellington to-night.
