INCREASED HARBOR DUES. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright Sydney, April 7. A veritable storm of protest has been raised in the Assembly against the new wharfage and harbor rates the Government proposes to levy ia Sydney, the objection being that the imposts will adversely affect the producer* of th<> State and drive trade away. The Bill provides for a tax of sixpence per ton on wheat, sixpence per bale on wool and tenpenee per ton on general merchandise, thereby raising £34,000. It is further proposed to impose harbor dues at the rate of tenpenee per ton on ships loading, but this will not be charged if the vessel is loaded at the wliarf, the wharfage charge being sixteenpcnce per (on. It is not proposed to extend the dues to Newcastle. The measure wag introduced and read a first time.
