MAKETAWA FACTORY.

SUPPLIERS' PICNIC.

The annual gathering of the suppliers to the Maketawa factory being favored with splendid weather it drew a large arowd on Thursday last. Visitors from Inglewood, Tariki and every road contiguous to the Maketawa district were present. The very suitable grounds of Mi*. A. Marshall were placed at the disposal of 'the committee and many re-, marks were made as to the utility of same. The committee, consisting of Messrs Marshall (2). Stephens (2) 'Brown (3), Thomas, Hall, C. JJoble, and Dombroski had arranged a very attractive programme, and the different events proved very interesting, being well supported. A ladies' committee consisting of Misses Corney (2), Johnston, Marshall, Browji and Mesdames Brown, Corney, and Marshall worked hard in attending to the wants of the "inner man,", a large marquee being utilised for the l purpose. Everything went off without. a hitch, and it speaks well for lift management, but, then, Maketawa ;ilwaya does things we'll, anil hospitality is its chief item. The children's races were under the efficient direction of Mr. E. Thomas, and the results were satisfactory- to all concerned. Mr. W. Muv-

shall carried out the onerous duties of secretary and was ably Im-ked liy each and all of the committee mentioned.

liegarding the sports items, the Shareholders' Handicap was annexed by 11. and J. Dombroski in a dead heat, and tlu> Sock Race fell to Puggan, of Stratford, after a very amusing struggle. The usual tug-of-war, married v. aingle, as usual caused excitement, but the bachelors were too many for the benedicts.

Another interesting item was the naildriving competition for Indies, which was wonjiy .Mrs. ii. Thomas after a good '•go" with Mrs. Jirown. There were six, entries for the Hop, Step and Jump, which ended in a win for Taylor, by a narrow margin. A special race for young ladies, for special prizes donated by Mrs. lirown. resulted in a win for Miss Bridgemiii:, with Miss Jones second.

The event of Stepping the Chain, always a big entry drawer, was in the ca*e of the men won by Reeve, and in the ladies' by Miss Cortiey. The Ualf-r.iile (five entries) resulted in a win for Taylor, v ith Hinlz (Kaimii'o) second. The old veterans were very tardy in replying to the invitation to strip for the Old Men's Race (live entries), which fell to tile lot of Jellymaif.

The 100 yards sprint was won by Utiggan, witli Taylor second, out of an entry of eight, anil the 220 yards (seven entries) fell to the same two in 'the same order.

I'. Salisbury won the pntting-Uie-siiot event, with, llinti', second, and the Cricket Ball Throwing, which drew 16 entrants, was won bv Taylor.

Another event whicji never fails to entice a large entry, I lie sheen i;uessin<j, was won by -Mr. .J. SutliorlniKf, of Inelewood. The Thread-t he-needle I!ace was vfon by Woods and Mrs Tliomus. Much interest was shown in this event. The Potato Race was run in boats, Voiimj,' bring tbe final winner. ( Races for boys, races for, girls (young',

old, married and single) lollie scrambles ete.. were got oil' during the day. and if anyone present left the ground dissatis-

lied with the day's outing it would be a well if he visited a doctor or tool; i

liver tonie. Everything conduced to perfect success the weather, the niaiittjfenient. the pounds, the attendance. and, a bore all, the sociability of all. 1 must not. forget to chronicle that Mr. J. li. lline. A1.1'., paid a short visit, and that 31 r. licit 15rown did a roaring "biz" with sofl drinks and fruit, both items very liecessarv on such a line day.
