THE RAILWAYS.
SHORTAGE OP REVENUE. NO REDUCTION IN RATES. By Telegraph—Prcs Association. Auckland, Saturday. The Hon. James Allen, interviewed on the subject of railway rates ana finance, said the alteration of railway rates lias to be gerioualy considered. IVrsonlly he did not think it possible to reduce rates, considering tho increased cost of upkeep. As Minister of Finance he did not see how they were going to get the railway revenue which he anticipated for the year just ended. This was largely owing to the loss of revenue due to the folly of strikes. The results had come out a little better than looked likely two or three months ago, but the I revenuo was nothing like what they ought to have got from tho railways. The Auckland Exhibition pulled the receipts up a bit, but not to the extent anticipated.
