CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY' MELTING. The ordinary meeting- ■>£ tile Clifton County Council was lull! at Waitara on Friday, when there v.rtv present: Crs. S. W. Bower (chairman i K. T. Hicks, S. Elliott, S. .1, Keiiuiiigtur,, ;i. Sander and W. J ones. ENGINEER'S LiXL'oRT. The engineer (Mr. ('. 1\ Dowsett) reported that in the Waihi riding the metalling contracts on the Nikorima Wairau and Ohanga ranis had been satisfactorily completed. Un the Inland North road tin; stoi:;- w;is now ready at the crusher site. In the Tikorangi riding, the . light grader had been at work on the Otaroao road, but there alii! remained certain sections requiring attention. In tlie Ngatimaru riding both metalling contracts on the .limetion road were completed and the saiulstoniiig at Macau would now be proeuded with. In the Urenui riding, the metalling contracts had been slow in starting owing to various raises, but carting bad | now commenced at e'acli end. The eontractor for .the'beach stone had not erabraced every opportunity of acquiring boulders, but. would require to show more activity in the future, as regular inspections were noiv being made as to deposits. Good progress was being made with the' Okoke metalling contract. In the Mokau riding the Tupoki metalling had been completed. The shell rock contracts at Uniti were progressing Well. On the Okau road one section of sanding was completed anil another portion was Hearing completion. Arrangements had been made for the l'ukearuhe metalling. He hoped shortly to have a man for the Taramouku bridge erection. In view of future requirements, he suggested that an additional . loan for bridges should be raised, according to details recently supplied. Plans were also subknitted for the erection of ilood openings i and also for .the Putiki bridge. ! The engineer was given authority to J extend Paul and Tate's metal contract Jat Okoke up to ;>UO yards,\if necessary. , The engineer was authorised to cali f tenders for the Matau-Kiore road, for > the erection of the. Putiki bridge, and for the Ilood gate near Rae's on the MimiMokau road. ROAD REQUIRED. Mr- W . Snell, of Waihi, again pointed out that the road leading to his section was in a bad state of repair, in fact, he could not take his, vehicle out | of a walk without incurring considerable risk; NVihing hail been spent on the road for twenty .years, and as he had to use it every day lie thought that he was I entitled to some liltie consideration. Tile gorse had now been cleared off the road, and he asked the Council either to grade it or to plough and harrow it. The chairman remarked that the Waihi riding appeared to bo a net-work of by-roads.
Cr. Hicks said that the g'orse had been cleared oil' about half of the road. He did not .see what could be done in matter. The road only lead to one ■ man's section, and when the furze was 'cleared a couple of days' work would put the road in fair order. Personally, he thought it would bo a mistake to break the surface a* it would he better ! to travel over the grass. Left in the engineer's lipids to report to next meeting. i THE .MAIN" MOKAU ROAD. Under date March iWth, Mr. F. Orbell telegraphed from Tongaporutu that seven chains of the main road opposite ■ roll's and three chains at Kntser\, l-i'iiti, wet/ 1 very bad and would soon he impassable. The engineer stated that the latter portion would be metalled shortly, in the present metalling contract. GENERAL. .Mr. 11. ,Jones, surfaceman at Uruii, forwarded his resignation 011 account of being the successful tenderer for Uruti road metalling. - The resignation, was accepted. Mr. L. Puttie, acting inspector of noxious weeds, uotiiied that the fennel and penny royal growing- on the main road between Waitara and Urcimi would receive attention at an early date. The report of the conference oi Turanaki county councils, held at IClthain re toll gates and mftor trallic, was adopted as already published. The L'ublic" Twist Ofiice. Wellington, asked the Council for particulars of the sections of Native Land on which the Council complained of .ragwort growing. Mr. H. Larsen, of l'ehu, wrote asking the Council to forward £8 'life, being the cost of replacing a coilapseil puuga bridge on the I'uke road with a ."ft by lilt heart of rimu slab culvert. The engineer will report on the matter to next meeting. Cr. Sander was appointed to represent the Council at the Barkblocks Counties' Conference at Taumarumii on April 14, in place of Cr. O'Sullivan. The Public Works Department forwarded copies of ordcrs-in-Couucil declaring portions of the Moki and Tmg'atu roads to lie county roads. It was resolved to request the county engineer to report on these roads before the Council took them over. The resignation of Mr. 1). tlutehin as surfaceman at Okoke was accepted, and the engineer was authorised to fill the vacancy. The chairman and Ors. .Jones, Tlicks. ami Klliott anil thi' engineer were delegated to revise I he schedule of tolls and report at next meeting. Cr. .Sander was voted CI! lis expenses for attending- tue pllham conference. The tender of ft. A. J'rabant was accepted for the election nl' surfacemen's cottages at t'renui and Onaero at £2ll 4s and 4s respectively. Mr. A. Totts was appointed surfaceman for the Mokau riding. LOANS AND MACIUNKUV. Cr. Sander gave notice to move at next meeting that the Council raise a loan of .£3OOO, ivz., C::r>lH) I'or bridges, and C1 5(10 for machinery, crusher, roller, and traction engines. II was resolved to station the small .'•■ rider in the .\gat':narn riding, and to erect a shed in which to house it. Cr. Kennington suggested the purchase of two or three more graders for various portions of the county.—Held over.
