A. AND P. GYMKANA. Extraordinary interest and activity is being manifested by a number of gentlemen in Stratford just at present. Men are seen in every direction with ropes round stumps, pulling for dear life, it seems, to shift the stump. Men are pulling against motor ears, and it is even rumored that one party is prepared to j pull against the mail train. All this j calls to mind the old question, "If two irristible objects, travelling at the highest speed, were to collide, what would happen?" Training operations are proceeding apace and teams from all parts of the district will be pre'sent at the Gymkhana on Easter Monday to compete in the gigantic, titanic, prehistoric competition known as the great Gymkhana tug-of-war. The teams are to pull on boards in the orthodox style, and the Association is indeed fortunate in securing, as judge and supervisor, a member of the last New Zealand championship team. The event will be tremendously exciting, and only people with strong nerves and stout hearts will be able to stand the strain of witnessing j it. The celebrated Territorial team is j to be present and also many other teams who are pledged to lower their colors. The trot-ting races have filled very well, 1 some think too well, but the races will be run off in heats. BERNARD'S PICTURES A glance at the list of pictures to be screened at His Majesty's Theatre foT the current week should suffice to convince all and sundry that the new programmes are the strongest and most attractive that could be shown at any theatre. Detective dramas are always populr, and the Lubin production, "The; 1 Special Officer," is said to be one of j supreme interest. This splendid drama is to form the star attraction in to- •' night's entertainment, and should -it- j tract a full house. The thrilling sensa- i 1 tions exhibit remarkable ingenuity of | construction, and are so cleverly worked 1 out that interest is maintained at tension point throughout. All the support- 1 ing films are of great merit, the selection showing that the management has i>c- 1 curately guaged the taste of local picture patrons, while the professional or- 1 chestra gives an added pleasure to the attractive entertainment. 1 TOWN HALL PICTURES. The popularity of the current programme at the Town Hall testifies to its excellence. With such stirring and sensational dramas as "The Mystery of the Yellow Room," "The Artist and the Brute," "Dangerous Weapon," and "The Lad from Old Ireland," picture patrons have a choice bill-of-fare, while the comic films are certainly true to name. AH the supporting film items are meritorious and well deserve public patronage. The music rendered by Professor Henderson is an added pleasure, and the popular prices bring the entertainment within the. reach of all. RIFLE SHOOTING (By Bisley). On Thursday ten members of the Stratford Rille Club assembled to fire in j the second stage of the Masters' Cup. | The wind was very tricky and unreliable, blowing in puffy gusts. Rifleman Sung- | ster topped the day's shoot with 89 oft I the rifle. Thoße now leading for the [cup arc:—Rillemen Sangster, Hopson and YY. Brocklebank, with several other I members close up.
