"The man was in dire mental stress,'' continued the detective. "He was without money when, he got word that his wife was dying at Auckland, and to raise the money necessary to get to Auckland latendered this cheque to the landlord of the place where he was staying and got it cashed. it was subsequently found that the cheque was valueless, but before the issue of the warrant for his arrest became known to him he sent £1 to irefircal and notified him that he would make good the rest of the money as soon as he could. There is nothing in the nature of a previous ollence ngamsl, him, and his character is good." •'Even a good end cannot justify a wrong act," commented Mr. Cut'tcn, S.lf., "but I suppose the man has been sufficiently punished by being brought here, lie will be convicted ami ordered to come up for sentence when called on. under condition that he setiles up the repayment of the money."
