THE ASSESSMENT COURT.

The Valuer and Council are to be congratulated upon the success of this year's valuations. Some were reviewed in the Assessment Court yesterday. The valuations in tho sum were not much below those of last year, wften such a hubbub was raised, being only £ll2l lower. Only 61 objections were lodged, and of this number 54 were adjusted without the aid of the Court, the objections for the most part being duo to clerical errors or mistakes in area. Only seven were contested. The borough won three, lost one, and in the others there was no appearance of the objectors. The Court sat last year for a considerable period, and the large majority of the 227 cases were given against the Council. But we agree with counsel's statement in Court yesterday that had the Council' been represented by counsel on that occasion and supported with the necessary evidence, it is probable that many of the valuations would have been sustained. On the whole, the valuer (Mr. F. Hickman Russell) has done his work thoroughly and efficiently, and he and the Council are deserving of congratulation on the outcome of the assessments, which numbered no fewer than 5521, and must have entailed considerable work and care.
