AN INSANITARY DISTRICT.

There is no use blinking at the fact that one of the outlying portions of greater New Plymouth is at present in a most insanitary state. The recent typhoid cases emanating from there put the authorities on their guard, but the result of the inspections carried out suggest that our sanitary inspection hitherto has been somewhat of a farce. Some months ago \ve strongly condemned the neglect of the town centre in this respect, and as an outcome, an improvement was effected. Whilst not in possession of the whole of the contents of the report on the present typhoid outbreak submitted to the Borough Council by qualified health officers, we are led to believe that the criticism and recommendations are of a sweeping nature. To give effect to the latter may entail some disagreeable resolutions and processes, but the borough councillors must do all that the law insists shall he done in protecting the publie health and preventing the further spread of the disease. Whilst not wishing to pose as alarmists, we must warn residents to be exceptionally careful about sanitary matters just now, for the neglect of ordinary commonsense rules of cleanliness has led to a state of affairs in this one portion of the borough which will greatly surprise people when the reports are, as'they must he, made public.
