ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
FATAL FALL FROM A HORSE. By Telegraph—'Press Association. Invercargill.. Last Night. A sad accident happened a short distance from Brown's, resulting in the death of Alexander Stuart Patterson, a farm laborer, 28 years of age, who leaves a widow and family. Deceased, who wa3 minus his left hand, and was employed on his brother's farm at iSpringhills, left home at <i.3o p.m. for Brown's, about four mile- away, riding a horse he had just purchased. On the return iourney he was accompanied bv Robe.rt Ross, and on arriving at the hitter's house, deceased rode to the house to obtain matches, Ross remaining at the gate to close it after Patterson left. After waiting for about a quarter of an hour, Ross weni inside, and found deceased lying on his back on the ground, unconscious, with the horse a short distance away. Ke was removed to the house, and Dr. Gow called in, but he remained unconscious until death. Deceased had had no drink at Brown's, and was perfectly sober when returning home. The cause of death was a fracture of the base of the skull.
