RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
A COOL DRIVER. By Telegraph—Press Association. IMniaru, Last Night. An accident at 4.30 p.m. delayed ih» second express norht Uiis afternoon. A ram fair was being held at SmitlificUl showgrounds, and the shunting of the sheep trucks had been going on. When the express approached the loop-line, 1 h* driver, Harrington, noticed that the points were at "half-cook," and put on the emergency brake, checking the pace. The engine and tender passed the points, but the first carriage turned off and pulled the engine and tender off the rails. Before stopping, the three derailed vehicles ploughed up the permanent way. Fireman C, W, Beaumont jumped from the engine and struck the lever of the points, severely injuring' his knee and leg. The promptness of the driver in applying the brakes doubtless saved greater damage. Tin? train was delayed for some hours while temporary rails were being laid.
