The steering gear was smashed, the boats lost, and deck fittings and hatches swept overboard. The crew bcaame mutinous, and looted the stores, but were overpowered and bound with ropes.

ppeals, and a boat was launched fruit•ssly. The second pllicer, Evans, then

swam in tremendous seas, and carried a line to the Mafipo. The towlino broke after two .hours, but the steering gear was' repaired, and the Maipo reached port, convoyed by the Northam.
