DISTRICT NEWS.
1 EGMONT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Sports Club held their annual sports on Thursday, 26th inst., in glorious weather. There was a fair attendance. The events were got off in good time, thanks to the untiring efforts of the secretary (Mr. H. W. Baxter), who performed his many duties without any extra exertion, which goes to show what a little tact and an energetic committee can accomplish. Jaek Morton, a High School hoy, performed well and won the "cup," beating last year's champion; J. Hinz, by one point. All the running events were close finishes, showing that the handicapper (Mr. Carter) knows something about the game. The school committee, who held the children's picnic the same day, amused the youngsters with various events, the chief one being the pillow-fight between Sinclair and Martin, Martin proving the winner after a hard struggle. In the evening the hall was packed to overflowing, sitting room for the majority being out of the question. Nevertheless, the audience were well pleased with the'efforts of the performers. The farce, ''Two heads are better than one," caused amusement. The cast of characters was: Mr. Strange (Mr. P. Price), Ellen Strange, his niece (Miss C. Nisbet), Mr. Maxwellton (Mr Owen Kinsella), Sammy Maxwellton's only son (Mr. R. Sinclair), and Charles Conquest (Gordon ilarsh). Sammy, as the silly son, caused a great amount of laughter. Following are the vocal and instrumental items:— Overture, Mr. Marsh's orchestra; song", Mr. IW. Earp; son, Miss Airy; song, Mr. JGeddes; song. Mr. F. SinIclair (encored); speech, Mr. .7. Hill; j\fr. Geo. Marsh's orchestra. The con.cert concluded with the farce, after I which ''('iod Save the King" was sung. The hall was then cleared for dancing, which was kept going till about halfpast two. Mr. Geo. Marsh's orchestra supplied the music, and Mr. S. Jury performed the duties of M.C.
A euchre party and dance is to be held here on Thursday, April 2.
OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent;. At the S.M. Court on Thursday tlu alleged slander case, W. Crawford v. K. Morris, was settled out of Court. Defendant pays all costs. Most of the business of the Court eon- [ sißted of debt cases. I Mr. Brunette, of Marlborough, has bought Mr. Gibbs' interest in Middleton's Hotel. The new building will be constructed in ferro-eoncrete—not wood, as already commenced and intended under the previous proprietorship.
