SUFFRAGETTES FIGHT FOR THEIR RIGHTS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright London, March 27. The Poplar Borough Council was discussing whether to let halls to suffragettes when it was moved that the question be now put. The suffragettes shouted "cowards," hurled scores of stinkpots, bags of flour and other missiles from the gallery. Women broke down the barrier and engaged in a hand-to-hand conflict with the councillors, some attempting to use chairs as weapons and others life preservers. The police were called, but refused to enter the chamber on the ground that they were not in sufficient strength. The majority of councillors retired, and the disturbance was quelled, but business was impossible.
ANOTHER FANATICAL OUTRAGE. \ THE ABBEYLANDS FIRE. London, March 27. Mr. Hugh M'Calmont's mansion, Ahbeylands, has been burned, the damage being estimated at £13,000. Suffragettes are suspected. The grounds were recently used as a drill ground for Ulster volunteers. Received 28, 5.5 p.m. London, March 27. A suffragette message was found at Abbeylands addressed to Sir Edward Carson stating that the betrayal of women leads to disaster.
