STRATFORD NEWS.

FROM OUR RESIDENT REPORTER. i '— ■ — Office and -U»)> Printing Works: York Chambers (upstairs) Telephone No. 113.

STSAitfORD RACING CLUB. Considc.able interest, is being taken in the affairs of lli,s club just at present owing to the dissatisfaction which' exists ill Of tiic lllt'lubel'S liavillg'llo control over the management of the Club's ah .is. This i.eiiug was strongly in cviilcn. at the :n-ral meeting hold in August hist when a resolution was passed requesting the' Committee, to rcIlieve t l '" guarantor.- of their liability when ennvoiiieir. ami asHho guarantor's nrc entitle,! to, .mil ,l.i actually nominate the majority , ~ committee, it is •easy lo undcr-iam! ih;it, tlieir continued c.vislelK eiuses a .mowing irritation. It appears, e >.,-vor, thai no steps have so far been i.'.l.cii to carry out the. resolution to .iispeiise wuh the guarantors' services, and this 1,,,- led to' a requisition for a giuernl meeting which lias been called for to-nio.;ro,v (Tuesday). Jt is li;,liter of cumnl gossip' thaitrouble has arisen ovr the requisition for tlii- ", neral incetie;:. From what can be ,;atlicred it a|,p-irs that the rcquisilio! was accompanied by a notice of motion to delete the rule empowering the*guarantors to nominate the majority of the committee, both of these two formal notices being handed to the sec-1 rctary on t'i„ -2ist iust. In eases of notices ,f mo-ion i'o, altering the rules, fourteen days" notie, before the meeting has to be given, ami il is provided that special n.ecling., iini.-V be called not less than seven or more than 14 days after receipt of lee requisition. The secretary, it is Maled, a-ii'd on the requisition as to calling' fie meeting, but. did so hy n, ~,-,■ dated , ..„ days after the receipt of me reqiii-ltioti. * The notice of motion, however, was not accepted, the reason being, it ;- said, that there was insullieicni notice. Whether he was advised on the poii i or not is immaterial, hut the effect - f his action is undoubtedly i„ nullifv ihe rule as to notices of nio.iou aH'oci'iig the rules. Possibly he has inadvei'ently confused the prescribed nine for .ailing the meeting with that foi- holdiie:- il-two very different matter.-, ivla!- to which'there may be some argument at the meeting on Tuesday, which promises to be anything but. ueM. The question at issue is whethi ■: w guarantors shall control the club, or whether ;iei.t function shall devolve on the members. This is a matter for those concerned to settle, but in the light of ihe non-acceptance of the notice „i' imelon it is not improbable th.it objections will be raised. The public are the .-importers of racing clubs, and therefore the matter is one in which "'.., are interested. If wise counsel prevail. the question will be ■-''tiled on it, riu and not. blocked by technical,.:.. >. The racing clubs would he will advise;! to avoid internal troubles, c. peeialy 1 !..,-,> ahee.ting administration. In these democratic day-- the principle i,f erect government in all ad-mini.-lralivc c, ,n-»- is taken as paramount, so that there Is no question that the desire of the members of the club to control their own af'.irs is not only in accordance wiili i 1,,, , p j r j t of u„.' ilL , ( . but is just and reasonable. 11 seems impossible lo imagine that any objection can be found .-."fliciontly plausible, to prevent this dislnble aim of the 1 members of the Stratford Club from being achieved. The trotting races have filled ' remarkably well, and as entries do not close until April li. a record entry is certain. The Dog Trial has filled well, and, as the course is a good one, the event, a driving and yarding competition, is sure to provide an all absorbing interest. The jumping competitions are well up to last year an 1 by April (i are certain to exceed that tally. A local enthusiast has picked a lug of war team that, in his opinion, is sure to beat all comers. A small committee has the arranging of the 'Tug of War in hand and is going to have the event run in strictly sporting lines. Boards will be provided to pull on, and should got busy immediately. There will lie the usual novelty events, such as Buck Jumping, Stepping the Chain, Sheaf Tossing and children's races; in fact, the committee of the association has spread itself in providing fun for the million.

GENERAL. The Fire Brigade lias decided to iul'd a garden iete annually. This is not surprising, in view of the great success that was achieved at the recent function.

The forthcoming contest for the mayoralty is already exciting considerable feeling. The supporters of both candidates are organising, and the usual crop of pin-pricking partisanship is in evidence. The muniepal atmosphere is decidedly "electrical." Both candidates have a strong backing, and if the issua is conlincd, as it should be, to borough affairs, the result will be very interesting. Mr. W. McL Kennedy modestly disclaims the very lengthy services atIributed to him as a member of the Taranaki Kducalion Hoard, being quite eonlent to claim the credit of Ms .14 years' record.

Considerable satisfaction is felt locally at the tenor of the recent editorial in the Daily News endorsing the claims of Stratford as the most suitable place for a junction with the Opunake line. Amazement is expressed at the actisn of the Government, in deciding on tlie Te Koti route in face of the recommendation.- of the department's ollicers and the Commissioners' report, hut it'is anticipated that eventually the main junction for the line will be at Stratford, the natural position for linking up purposes. The Weshyan liazaar on Thursday proved a thorough success. The school room was idled in the evening, and the numerous competitions were well patronised, as were, the various stalls. It is estimated that with donations the proceeds will reach about £IOO, a result that must be gratifying to all concerned.

A lirst offender against the luvv of sobriety was convicted and discharged on Saturday morning. The following books have been added to the Stratford Public Library:—

There is no questioning the fact that "The Kasli" is the best place in Stratford for men to supply their clothing and mercery wants.
