Wanganui, Last Night. There was ideal weather, the goin? was good, and the attendance was fair for the opening day of the Rangitikei meeting.

Taranaki horses shaped well, Katana and White Crane winning easily, and Simp!" Sam, Florist, and Tctikura gaining places. Deeley rode four winners, Ratuna, Papamarama, 'White Crane, anil Powder Fox.

The racing opened with the Scott Memorial Handicap. liatana was sent out second favorite, and won very easily Trom Simple Sam and several doubtful performers. The Maiden Handicap was a good race. His Eminence, wPh Bell in the saddle, winning nicely from Grey Guard, both paying good dividends.

Florist led Jackman for a mile in the Hack Hurdles. Jackman then assumed command, and comfortably beat Jluia. Florist mn a good race. Punters rightly picked out Lubrilin'o and Orleans for the Carnarvon Handicap. Orleans led into the straight, but Luforiline treat him home bv half a length. The Cup was a fine race. Mescal was favorite, but van poorly. Le nta led into the straight, but appeared indifferently handled, and Moutoa Girl caught and beat him home. Lady Volga was second half a mile from home, but was bumped back, and did well to run into fifth place. Firing Line let backers down badly in the Welter. St. Bees and Patroness led to the turn. Papamarama then came through, and won easily. Austin was a warm favorite in the Open Welter, but was never prominent. Guiding Way and Manitau made the i-nnning, hut' White Crane, was in front at the bend and scored decisively from Tetikura.
