THE CARNIVAL QUEEN.
The members of Miss Hawke.'s committee are not allowing tile nrass to grow under their feet. A -"rand daiu'o in aid of this young lady's. Candida lure is to be held in the Brougham Street Hall on Friday night, and oa Monday a swimming carnival will be held in the Municipal Baths, to wind up the season, and the proceeds of this also will be devoted to 'Miss Hawke's candidature. A fancy dress' football match will also be held on the I'eereation virounds tomorrow week, when teams representing the original Star and Tukapa clubs will compete. A grand fancy dress procession is a special feature. The committee supporting ''The Country Girl's" candidature is very active, and has arranged entertainments at various centres, in which Miss Hilda Bishop, the candidate —who is always a popular performer—will assist. It is said that a gift auction has been arranged, settlers havintr promised +o donate a beast for this nurpose, Tf that is so. "The Country Girl's" chances look particularly rosy.
