BATTLE AT TORREAN PROCEEDING,
FURIOUS CANNONADING.
By Cable —Press Association—Copyright Ruceived 24, 10.15 p.m. Mexico City, March 23. The Torrean battle has begun. General Villa captured an outside position.. Furious cannonading is proceeding. The whole of the surrounding country is protected by wire entanglements. General Villa reports the capture of three hundred prisoners.

Mr. Percival further reports that Benton disregarded the advice of bis wife and friends and visited General Villa unarmed. A scuffle occurred in Villa's office. Perfect quiet followed, and a body waß later removed. The Consul infers that Benton was stabbed, but does not state who stabbed him, but it is thought likely that it was one of Villa's officers.
TROOPS IN CONFLICT. Received 24, 5.30 p.m. Mexico City, March 23. It is reported that the Federals are being driven back upon Torrean. REPORT ON BENTON'S DEATH. - AMERICAN SOLDIERS ENGAGED. New York, March 23. The British Consul, Mr. Percival, reports that investigation disclosed that Benton's death was not due to pistolshots. Mr. Percival does not state the exact cause of death, but it is believed that he wishes it to be inferred that Benton died of stab wounds. Mr. Pcreival's report adds that Benton appeared before General Villa unarmed. A message from Eagle Pass, Texas, states that American soldiers had a brush with a number of Mexican Federal troons across the Rio Grande above Del Rio. One American was injured. The Federals retired, and their loss is unknown.
