RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
NO SERIOUS DAMAGE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington. Yesterday. There was a narrow escape from a serious train accident on Friday night near Thorndon, when the train which arrives at Wellington at 10.45 n.m. was partly derailed. The truin comprised 27 wagons and three passenger cars. When the viaduct over the Hutt Road was reached a series of jolts and lara indicated that something was amiss. The brakes were immediately applied, wlien it was found that four 15-ton trucks had left the rails and were badly damaged. The accident was due to the door of one of the trucks being wrenched off by coming into contact with a beam of the bridge, lifting the truck bodily off the rails and derailin" the three following trucks. The forepart of the train proceeded to the station. A gang of men working all night had the line clear by morning. . Wellington, Later. Further inquiries regarding the train accident on Friday nicht show that the | damage was not so great as at first stated.
