DECREASE OF 11 </ 8 D PEE HEAD DURING 1913. The following return showing the amount of alcoholic liquor consumed in the Dominion during 1913 is supplied by Mr. A. S. Adams, of the New Zealand Alliance. It is based, as in previous years, upon the Customs returns of liquor cleared for consumption:— Spirits—S7(i,7(i!) gallons at £2 per gallon, £1,735,538; increase, 1-2,973 gallons.
.' Wines—147,050 gallons at £2 per gallon £2.94,112; decrease, 05(10 gallons. Imported beer—299,210 gallons at (is per gallon, £89,703; increase 2830 gallons. Beer Brewed in New Zealand—--10,001,200 gallons at 4s per gallon, £2,000,240; increase, 214,080 gallons. Total, .€4,137,053. Total for the year, 1!)12, €4,081,102; increase, €50,491. Estimated mean population for 1913, 1,008,045; Maoris, 49,844. Total, 1,118,489; estimated increase in population 29,070. Cost of liquor per head—l9l3, £3 14s; 1912, £3 14s ll'/id; decrease ll'/,d. The quantities of different liquors consumed per head of population work out as under:—Spirits, .78 gallon*; wnes, .131 gallons; beer, 9.209 gallons.
