FIRE AT NEW PLYMOUTH.

AN EGMONT STREET OUTBREAK.

MR. C. 0. HAWKE'S SHOP. The clanging of the firebells at 1.30 a.m. yesterday brought a number of people from their beds, when it was found that a fire had broken oul in the top storey of Mr C. 0. Hawkc's bulk shop in Egmont Street. The flames were bursting through the windows, nnd matters looked dangerous for the ndio'ning buildings. The New Plymouth Fire Brigade, however, was quickly on the spot with their motor-engine, and, aided \r a good pressure of water, soon had the Are under control, and at 2 a.m. all danger was practically over. The fire wan confined to the upper storey, which was almost completely gutted, and a conorVab'e amount of stock was damaged bv fire and water. The origin of the *re is at present a mystery.

The brick partv wall ""evened the Rre spreading to Mr Wooller's promises nest door. The Insurances on tlie stock amount to £2450, made tip as follow:—Standard Fire Insurance Company. £1200: Alliance Assurance Company, £750; North British and Mercantile Insurance Company £SOO.
