Thosi- unskilled laborers in Auckland who are on the unemployed list seem to have no gre,at number of opportunities for securing relief on public works at the present moment. A few days ago,tli<> Mayor telegrtiphed to - the Prime Minister, asking if work could V piayided on the- railway works in the neighborhood of Auckland for some of the unemployed of the city, and'received a reply indicating, that work 'might be found for a portion of them. Enquiry yesterday* showed that so far no. relief'lias' been accorded* bv the. Railway <Dcnart"meot in this district. The Labor Department states that the unskilled labor market in Auckland.is unsatisfactory.«s far as placin" m—> in the city is concerned: Callers seeking work lave been numerous, .most of them being sinn-Ie men who are disinclined to leave the city, preferring to remain in the hope that, some suitable employment will turn ,u», but there is no work offering.
