WELLINGTON'S HARBOR.
AN INCREASE. OF TRADE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Interesting statistics ' dealing with the trade of the port up to the end of the financial year on September !>O, 1913, were presented by the Harbor Board's chairman (Mr. R. Fletcher) at the annual meeting to-day, _ The report stated that goods passing "inwards totalled 535,040 tons, as against' 489,116, an increase of 45,624 *tons. or 9.30 per cent., a record for the port for the period. To September 30, 1913, there was a very satisfactory increase, of transhipments. The general cargo handled amounted to 188,832 tons, as compared with 151,236 tons in the previous year, an increase of 17,590, equal to 11.83 per cent. Thi3 was a pleasing feature, and showed the recognition the port was receiving from merchants and shipping companies eager to take advantage of the accommodation and facilities that were available- the port as a transhipping centre. During -the current year, various improvement works were proposed at an estimated cost of £74,000.
